The proposal was for the adaptive reuse of the former Victorian toilets on St Giles, Oxford into short-let accommodation. Along with an unconventional use, the project was incredibly sensitive and challenging from a planning point of view being in one of the most historically iconic streetscapes of Oxford.
In the end the exercise became about non-architecture and how transparent and non-existent an intervention can become. Frameless, non-reflective glass canopies merge out of the existing openings making them invisible and preserving the revered historic setting. Two short-let apartments are located in the divided below ground former toilets.
