The proposed refurbishment of 26 St Michael’s Street merges the success of the Bike Zone Café at No. 28-32 St Michael’s Street with a guest house. At ground floor the shop extends into No. 26 creating new showrooms, whilst the upper levels accommodate three new guest suites. On the first floor the two buildings are connected by a lead clad link element. The concept of the link stems from the myriad of lead infill roof/wall elements present in Oxford buildings. These infills usually occur where additions or accidental junctions are formed to a host building. Over time these become rich crafted elements nestled into the host building fabric.
The proposal is ambiguous in its shape and form, supporting the fact it is an infill element. The shape is also a response to the complicated existing junctions of roofs and walls requiring negotiation between the two Grade 2 listed buildings.
